Case
o2 Telefónica Tichelhaus Hamburg
More than a relocation.
Supporting the transformation towards a new workplace environment in Hamburg. The focus was on connecting spatial, technological and organisational change with the needs and perspectives of employees.
With the move to the new Tichelhaus, o2 Telefónica launched a comprehensive transformation of its workplace environment. Beyond a change of location, the project brought fundamental shifts in spatial structures, technology and ways of working: individual and shared offices gave way to an open workplace concept, new digital solutions were introduced, and everyday routines, from mobility to commuting, had to be rethought.
Connection, Co-Creation, Empathy
To understand the transformation from the employees' perspective, participation formats were introduced early on. Surveys, workshops and dialogue formats surfaced expectations, concerns and areas needing additional support — insights that directly shaped the ongoing transformation process.
"What mattered to me was that we had a real say in how the change was managed, what came first, and what support we needed along the way"
Information, Orientation, Empowerment
Building on these findings, a comprehensive communication and participation framework was developed to guide employees through the entire transformation journey. Together with Change Leaders, new ways of working were explored, questions from across the organisation were addressed, and insights from the user perspective fed back into the process. A jointly developed framework for collaboration in the open workplace created a shared understanding of the new working environment.
Participation, Identification, Acceptance
Before the move, employees could experience their future workplace first-hand through an exhibition — exploring upcoming changes, testing new technologies and getting familiar with the new environment. During the transition, an extensive onboarding phase — with information points, employee-led tours and personal exchange formats — supported the shift to the new way of working.
Cohesion, Celebrating Success, Community
The transformation continued well beyond the relocation itself. Ongoing support and a final evaluation captured experiences from the early phase, surfaced learnings and allowed the new workplace environment to be continuously refined
What made this project distinctive was the integration of spatial, technological and organisational change — with employees actively involved throughout.
Continuous participation, transparent communication and shared learning laid the foundation for a workplace that people understood, shaped, and made their own.
